Shelley Kardon has been sewing since she was 10 years old when she made clothes for her Barbie dolls. One summer, she and her mother took an applique class, and she was hooked!
Throughout high school, she took sewing classes and made her own clothes. During college, she studied home economics education at Drexel University, continuing to learn more and more sewing techniques.
She also did a lot of embroidery and other hand sewing. In 2005, she took quilting classes and learned how to make beautiful quilts from scraps of fabrics. She loved the enormous array of fabrics and the creativity of piecing bits and pieces to make something that could be used.
When a friend asked if she could make her daughter a t-shirt quilt, she jumped at the chance. Her first t-shirt quilt was an abstract arrangement of the young woman’s t-shirts, some from her childhood and others from her high school years.
Since then, Shelley has made numerous t-shirt quilts and has even started to make quilts from cherished baby clothes. Re-purposing clothes into a warm quilt is a keepsake that can be passed on from generation to generation.
